Reporting to the Team Leader or Community Manager, the Public Health Nurse (PHN), as an integral member of the Public Health Services team, provides nursing services within the framework of the Population Health/Health Promotion Model. Inherent in the role are knowledge, skills, and abilities specific to health promotion, epidemiology, community development, primary health care, public health ethics primary and secondary prevention strategies. Public Health Nurses translate knowledge from the health and social sciences to support health enhancing behaviours to diverse individuals, families, and population groups through universal and targeted interventions, programs and advocacy. Services are offered in communities, schools, homes and outreach locations to individuals, families and communities. |
Education, Training and Experience:
Baccalaaureate degree in Nursing from a recognized university with community health content and theory including a practicum in a Public Health setting and/or recent experience in a Public Health setting in last 5 years; or RN with Public Health/Community Health diploma from a recognized university and at least three years within the past seven years experience in Public Health Nursing Current practicing registration with the College of Registered Nurses’ of BC (CRNBC). Current valid BC Driver’s License.
Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, and ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with clients, co-workers and community partners. Demonstrated understanding and ability to apply the principles of adult education, health promotion, disease/injury prevention, population health approach, primary health care, determinants of health, community development, and the nursing process. Ability to organize and prioritize workload. Ability to work independently with limited direction but also able to function effectively as a member of a team. Ability to be flexible, innovative and resourceful in adapting to changes in the work environment. Ability to operate related equipment and to function in a computerized environment using a range of software programs. Demonstrated assessment and problem solving skills. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position. |
